It’s quite amazing to see the degree of tilt from the driver’s viewpoint and how easily the class 390 takes the curves at speeds of up to 125 mph!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs well as the usual cab cameras, we see the eleven coach train at dozens of locations, including Milton Keynes, Stoke on Trent and Stockport stations. We even take a brief look inside the Rugby ROC (Rail Operations Centre).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNarration is by BBC Radio 3’s Ian Skelly. He recalls the fascinating history of the ‘London and Birmingham’,  Britain’s first long distance intercity railway, engineered by Robert Stephenson and opened in sections from 1837.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur train then travels over the Trent Valley line before diverging at Colwich Junction onto the “Notty”, the North Staffordshire Railway, a company that remained independent for 75 years right up until the railway grouping. We see the single line token system from the signaler's point of view as well as the driver's. The reversal of our train at Battersby is an example of how today's branch is formed from various different routes. Recently re-modelled, the station is now signalled from York, two hundred miles to the north. After racing through the suburbs of North London, we encounter the notorious two-track bottleneck of the Welwyn viaduct. At Hitchin, we diverge over a specially-built single track flyover onto the Cambridge line. Having run non-stop from King's Cross to the University City, we then call at Cambridge North, Warerbeach, Ely, Littleport, Downham Market and Watlington. The scenic Fen line, consists of both double and single track sections, terminating in the ancient port and market town of King's Lynn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs well as the usual driver, station, trackside and aerial views, we see inside all six signal boxes on route. York ROC hands over to Cambridge PSB and in turn to traditional block signal boxes all the way to King's Lynn.
