En route we learn of France’s worst ever train disaster and see where 700 soldiers perished on board a runaway train. This feat of incredible engineering, coupled with the spectacular Alpine scenery, is a journey not to be missed.

*Commentary is available in English, Italian, French and German on the DVD and Blu-ray discs (menu driven).

Narrated by

Jonathan Kydd (plus 3 languages)*

Written by

Peter Middleton

Filmed in

Summer 2015

Duration

123 mins

Widescreen

Yes

Download size

4.9GB

Format

MP4 video

Both branches are on one DVD.

City branch

Edgware to Morden via Bank

Northern Line City branch runs from Edgware to Morden via Bank. To many it is the most scenic line in Britain. From Inverness to Dingwall we travel alongside the Beauly Firth and witness some of the last remaining Highland Railway semaphores still in operation at the time but long-since abolished. How many people realise that there was once a signal box at Lentran? We actually filmed inside it and recorded the sound in stereo.

At Dingwall we turn due west for the Highlands proper and traverse the summits at Raven Rock, Corriemoillie and Luib (the highest at 646ft) and stations such as Garve, Achnasheen and Strathcarron set amidst the beautiful Highland scenery.

Finally, the most spectacular section, Stromeferry to Kyle of Lochalsh along the shores of Loch Carron. All the while we follow this classic loco-hauled train from the air for some timeless classic footage. This last section took years to complete due to the solid rock that we now travel through and take for granted. At the end of the line, we see the classic Highland Railway terminus just a short hop from the Isle of Skye facing us. The original intention was for the line to cross to the Island - hence the Dingwall and Skye Railway name. However it never did. Instead passengers continued aboard the ferry at Kyleakin. You will even see the ferry in operation another piece of history for now, of course, the Isle is connected with the mainland by a road Bridge and the ferry has long since gone.

The loco featured is large logo Class 37262.

Narrated by

Paul Coia

Written by

Peter Middleton

Filmed in

1987

Duration

90 mins

Widescreen

No

Definition

Standard

Download size

2GB

Format

MP4 video

Fort William to Mallaig

The West Highland Railway (Mallaig extension) is arguably Britain's most scenic, and what better way of seeing it than from "The Jacobite" steam train.

Our cameras followed one such service in the glorious mid-summer sunshine on board Black Five No 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier. Our journey on board an ‘A’ stock train begins at the former and takes us through the very oldest part of civil engineering on the underground network, Marc Brunel’s 1843 tunnel under the Thames. Peak services continued to Shoreditch, which is where our journey ends.

Our second journey starts at Richmond, where we board a “D”stock, train, now also history, having been replaced by S stock. Our train takes us over the District Line’s main artery from Earl’s Court along the bottom half of the Circle line to Tower Hill, beyond which the line joins up with the Hammersmith and City line to Barking. We then continue all the way to Upminster alongside the c2c tracks. This most intensive route sees trains running with intervals of only two to three minutes in peak times. The journey time from Richmond to Upminster is approximately 90 minutes.

The Edgware Road branch then follows: Starting at Wimbledon, we travel on board a “C” stock train, at the time, deployed on the Hammersmith and City line as well as the District line's Wimbledon branch. At first, our train takes us over the former Southern Railway branch to Putney Bridge. Many had been constructed by a rogue contractor who saved thousands of pounds by only lining the tunnel with one row of bricks instead of the specified two. In danger of collapse, when the scam was realised a second layer had to be built inside, reducing the overall width. Following this, special narrow bodied trains had to be specially constructed. Since the scrapping of these and in order to allow the passage of standard width stock at the time of the 1980's electrification, many of the tunnels had to be singled.
